PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT
Program Development activities are an important aspect of GMU’s
CAPH services. Not only do the resources assist with others’ initiatives,
but professionals at GMU’s CAPH also prepare approaches for direct
implementation. This applied approach brings to action the philosophies
espoused by GMU’s CAPH. Noteworthy within this segment are resources
found with the Healthy Expectation project, focused on first year students.
In a parallel manner are the variety of alcohol abuse prevention strategies
found with the Promising Practices: Campus Alcohol Strategies project.
A wide range of traffic safety resources, from campaign initiatives to
research projects, is also found.

- HEALTHY EXPECTATIONS & COMPASS Healthy Expectations
initially focused on the implementation of Life Health Planning
approach, incorporating seven themes designed to promote healthy
living among college students: Optimism, Values, Health Care,
Relationship Health, Community Healthy, Nature, and Service.

discussion groups, materials, and e-mails, this project was designed
for first-year students. With new funding from the U.S. Department
of Education, Healthy Expectations promotes life planning and
transition strategies, assisting students aspire to the creation
and foundations for achievement of their own legacy. In 2005, the conceptualization which Healthy Expectations was based, materialized into COMPASS, a CD-ROM based resource distributed to all Mason freshmen as a tool for making a healthy transition to college. In the following year, Healthy Expectation's COMPASS was recognized as a 'model program' by the U.S. Department of Education. This initiative includes
a series of resources designed to assist campuses as they plan,
prepare, implement and review a comprehensive campus-based effort
to reduce alcohol abuse. Through three major publications and numerous
articles and affiliated resources, the project provides the foundation
for organizing a task force and promoting systematic leadership
on campus. Under the leadership of two co-directors and an expert
advisory panel, the project is designed to help make campuses healthier,
safer communities where living and learning occurs.

- LEGACY OF LIFE: Creating Healthy Futures A legacy of life is designed to assist individuals with their focus and their priorities. It helps each of us direct energies in a somewhat organized and planned way so that we are remembered, ideally, in ways that we desire. Legacy of life focuses on our accomplishments and our achievements so they are remembered. While we cannot fully control our legacy and how we are remembered, we are more likely to achieve the desired results if we seek them, than if we move through life without direction or purpose. That is, if we want some hope of being remembered in certain ways, then these memories are more likely to occur if we plan for it, than if we just think about it and do nothing.

Traffic Safety
|

|
|
CAPH personnel have prepared a wide range of traffic
safety initiatives for use by community leaders. These include
campaigns, resource materials, background documents and studies,
Traffic Safety Communications Kit, speaking guides, and related
resources helpful in promoting safer driving, walking, bicycling,
and related environments in their communities. These resources

Alcohol Summit
|
| |
|
Building upon the role
held by CAPH as the evaluator for this nationwide initiative implemented
by the North American Interfraternity Conference, insights were
gathered to encourage other campuses implement similar initiatives
to reduce alcohol abuse among fraternity and sorority members.

Virginia Voices and
Visions
|
| |
|
CAPH faculty and staff
prepared a videotape that compiled numerous perspectives of students
and staff at multiple campuses throughout Virginia. Used to highlight
different visions of the future regarding their campuses, and particularly
the role that of alcohol, this videotape served as a foundational
resource for discussion and inspiration

Millennial College
CD
|

|
|
Prepared to model the
use of technological approaches for addressing campus alcohol abuse
prevention, the Millennium Campus CD-ROM was prepared by CAPH faculty
and staff as the resource, background and documentation for workshops
at a statewide conference on college alcohol abuse prevention.

Program Development resources have been conducted for and/or with
grants from the following groups and organizations:
NORTH AMERICAN INTERFRATERNITY CONFERENCE
|

|
- ALCOHOL SUMMITS. A resource has been developed
to help college campuses as they work with fraternities and sororities
to reduce their alcohol-related concerns. Since CAPH served as
the evaluator for the North American Interfraternity Conference
on this initiative, a resource has been compiled that identifies
lessons learned from 18 pilot campuses, as well as strategies
for implementation. This is a helpful planning resource for campuses
as they seek to implement a local resource. See also http://www.nicindy.org/

written proceedings, this CD-ROM modeled the cutting edge technological
approaches espoused during this conference. See also http://www.abc.state.va.us/
- VIRGINIA VOICES AND VISIONS. In conjunction
with the Virginia College Alcohol Leadership Council, CAPH compiled
